Housing is central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), directly impacting health, economic opportunity, and access to employment and public services. The report emphasizes that safe, affordable, and well-located housing is vital for reducing poverty, improving quality of life, and transforming informal settlements. Furthermore, it positions housing as a key driver of climate action, calling for low-carbon, energy-efficient solutions and resilient infrastructure. Advocating for inclusive, community-led initiatives that integrate informal settlements into the broader urban fabric, the report ultimately urges governments to uphold housing as a fundamental human right and the foundation for greener, more equitable cities.

The work of Professor Vanesa Castan Broto, Global Sustainable Development Advisor to the United Nations, particularly her research on climate urbanism, has informed a chapter contribution titled 鈥淏uilding Climate Resilient Housing,鈥 which positions housing as a critical entry point for delivering climate action and urban resilience at scale. The chapter on climate-resilient housing starts from the premise that housing plays a dual role: on the one hand, we must step up action to make it more resilient; on the other, more resilient housing is a pillar for building the resilience of individuals and communities.
