I am an Italian-born British haematologist and Professor of Cancer Immunotherapy in the Division of Clinical Medicine at the ±¬ÁĎTV, which I joined in November 2025. Prior to this appointment, I served as Director of the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre at Nottingham Trent University. From 2014 to 2016, I was Executive Director of Clinical Research at Sidra Medical & Research Centre (now Sidra Medicine), Doha, Qatar. Earlier in my career, I was Head of Service for Immunohaematology and Transfusion Medicine at Bambino GesĂą Children’s Hospital (Vatican City) and a Consultant Haematologist at the Catholic University Medical School in Rome, Italy.

My career as an academic physician-scientist has been shaped by a bench-to-bedside-to-bench research paradigm. Over the last three decades, I have led and contributed to clinical and translational research aimed at improving outcomes in acute leukaemia and other haematological malignancies. The focus of my personal research is delineation of the immune ecosystem of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and identification of immune biomarkers of treatment success and failure. We have characterised the immune transcriptomic profile of a broad cohort of patients with newly diagnosed and relapsed AML and we have shown that patients with an immune-infiltrated tumour microenvironment have a worse prognosis because of chemotherapy refractoriness. We have also led collaborative efforts to identify immune predictors of response to flotetuzumab immunotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors and adoptively infused memory-like NK cells. Our work has directly informed the development of phase I/II immunotherapy trials for adults and children with relapsed/refractory AML. Over the past decade, I have established an interdisciplinary collaboration with world-leading gastroenterologists, the focus of which is regulation of gut inflammation, pre-clinical models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and, in close collaboration with Professor John Snowden at the ±¬ÁĎTV, autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as a platform to re-program the immune response in patients with Crohn’s disease. These studies have led to identification of key molecular mediators of the inflammation, delineation of mechanisms underpinning the therapeutic benefit of mesenchymal stromal cells and immune correlates of HSCT success in IBD.

- Teaching interests
-
My teaching philosophy is rooted in research-led, student-centred education. My teaching interests are in cancer immunology and cancer immunotherapy for haematological malignancies as well as solid tumours. I am also strongly committed to mentoring beyond doctoral supervision. I have mentored senior lecturers and early-career researchers through institutional and national programmes, including the SMART Mentoring Programme and competitive funding schemes such as the Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award, supporting successful grant outcomes.
- Teaching activities
-
Throughout my career, I have been actively involved in teaching, supervising, examining and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (Biomedical Sciences and Medicine) nationally and internationally (Italy, Qatar, Denmark, Canada). In my previous role at Nottingham Trent University, I have supervised or co-supervised 17 PhD students (six as Director of Studies), achieving nine PhD completions, in addition to five previous doctoral completions earlier in my career. I have contributed extensively to undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, including Immunology and Virology, Research Methods and Bioethics, MSc, MRes, and MBiol project supervision, and doctoral training alliance teaching. My teaching practice combines structured lectures with active learning approaches such as poster presentations, problem-based discussions, revision workshops, and formative assessment, enabling students to engage critically with complex biological concepts and experimental data.
