- Profile
-
I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1996 with a BSc (First Class Honours) in Neuroscience. I then completed an MRes in Neuroscience (University of Manchester, 1997) followed by my PhD entitled `Interleukin-1 and its receptors in the brain´ under the supervision of Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell (University of Manchester, 1997-2000).
I joined the ±¬ÁÏTV in 2001 to take up my first post-doctoral position, where I was keen to maintain and develop my interest into inflammatory mechanisms in disease, with a focus on the respiratory system. In 2010 I was appointed to a lectureship within the Inflammation Biology Research Group and in 2014 I was awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (PG CiLT) and became a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
During my lectureship my increasing involvement in teaching ignited a strong passion for learning and teaching, prompting me to actively pursue opportunities that would allow me to focus more on educational roles. In 2010 I started to teach on the MSc Molecular Medicine degree, this developed into running several modules for the course and I was appointed Deputy Programme Lead in 2023. During this time I also designed and led modules for several other courses, at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. I currently teach on multiple programmes within the School of Medicine and Population Health, and the School of Biosciences.
In the last few years I have also taken on multiple teaching-focused leadership roles. I was appointed Deputy Director of Phase 1 (MBChB) in 2021, and I also lead the MBChB Phase 2a Immunology block. My involvement with the MBChB has continued to develop, I was appointed Associate Director of Student Affairs (MBChB) in 2024 and Deputy Programme Lead of BSc in Medical Sciences Research Intercalation studies in 2025.
I am also a Faculty of Health representative for the Learning and Teaching Scholarship Network (LTSN) Steering committee, SMPH Annual Research Meeting Working Group committee member and SMPH Athena Swan Committee member.

- Teaching interests
-
I have created, developed, led and taught modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the Faculties of Health and Science for many years, with a particular focus on immunology and the impact of viral infections on respiratory disease.
I am also passionate about student support and welfare; I run an enhanced support programme for first year medical students as part of my role as Deputy Director of Phase 1, and support students in all phases of the MBChB in my role as a Associate Director of Student Affairs. I am also an academic tutor for undergraduate medical students, PGT and PGR students in the Medical school.
I am also committed to the continued improvement of teaching practice, supporting the development of others, and ultimately providing students with the very best learning experiences. My role as Faculty of Health representative for the Learning and Teaching Scholarship Network (LTSN) Steering committee allows me to support the ongoing development of colleagues across the University.
