I have had close links with the Sheffield Centre for Health and Related Research (ScHARR) since moving to Sheffield as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in 1994. I was appointed to an Honorary Chair at the School of Health and Related Research in 2003 and to the Chair of Vascular Surgery in 2004. I retired from clinical practice in 2011 but continued with research projects related to vascular services, technology appraisal and decision science at ScHARR.

My most recent research includes an extensive research programme, “The Design, Development, Commissioning and Evaluation of Patient Focused Vascular Services”, funded by a six-year NIHR Programme Grant for Applied Research. Subsequent studies have been related to socioeconomic and ethnic disparities in access to services and to the aortic aneurysm screening programme.  After completing these projects, I have been awarded an Emeritus Chair and have continued to be involved with further publications relating to my previous research.  In recent years I have been interested in the ethics of healthcare decisions and policy making and have continued to write on this and related subjects.  

Outside my healthcare research I have interests in art and craft, dabbling in several different techniques, particularly sculpture and wood turning, and I am an active member of Sheffield Hardware Hackers and Makers CIC.

  • Studies of patient and societal preferences for various aspects of service provision and delivery.
  • The development of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) for vascular disease.
  • Studies of disparities in access treatment and outcomes of vascular services based upon socioeconomic factors and ethnicity.
  • Studies of patient preferences relating to screening and surveillance for abdominal aortic aneurysm.
