Understanding and changing health and environmental behaviour
My research focuses on understanding why people do (or do not) engage in different behaviours, and using this knowledge to develop and evaluate behaviour change interventions to promote positive health and environmental behaviours. Much of my current work focuses on improving indoor air quality and reducing indoor air pollution.
I am currently the behavioural science lead on (2025-2027), an interdisciplinary research network on healthy indoor environments (funded by the EPSRC Micro Network Plus programme).
Previously, I was the behavioural science lead on (2021-2026), an interdisciplinary research consortium on understanding and improving indoor air quality (funded by the UKRI SPF Clean Air Programme; you can find out how to reduce air pollution in your home by watching our video on the ); and two interdisciplinary research projects on understanding and overcoming barriers to ventilation in the hospitality sector (2021-2022; 2022-2023: funded by the Health and Safety Executive’s , and Sheffield City Council). I have also been involved in research on single-use plastics, as part of the UKRI-funded interdisciplinary research programme Plastics: Redefining Single Use (2019-2020).
I am a member of the , and Sheffield:Air, an interdisciplinary network of researchers working on projects relating to air quality and pollution.
Understanding and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion
My research revolves around understanding and overcoming barriers to inclusion, and exploring strategies for reducing stereotyping and prejudice. I’m particularly interested in the effects of interpersonal confrontations of prejudice, and the effects of weight stigma on health and wellbeing.
I am currently the behavioural science lead on , a research project exploring how employment support systems could better meet the needs of neurodivergent people (2025-2026, funded by NIHR).
Previously, I was the behavioural science lead on a research project on understanding and tackling the barriers to employment experienced by autistic adults (2023-2024: funded by The Colt Foundation).
