Planning Director Simon, talks through a varied career since graduating from the MPlan and how the course provided a foundation for understanding planning.

I am a chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) with 18 years' experience, gained in both public and private practice. I have experience in leading major residential, commercial, education, and mixed-use developments across the country, helping clients deliver complex developments from inception through to construction. I graduated from the ±¬ÁÏTV in 2007 with a Masters in Urban Studies and Planning (MPlan). Following graduation, I spent the summer travelling in South America before accepting my first full-time professional planner role at Buckinghamshire Council.

I became a chartered member of the RTPI in June 2014 and at the same time moved over to the private sector taking on the position of Senior Planner at the Oxford branch of the property consultancy, Strutt & Parker, this broadened my experience significantly, both in terms of the scope of development sectors I was involved with as well as the geography of sites.

My current role primarily consists of supporting clients, which includes house builders, promotion companies, commercial developers, education establishments, and private landowners with the identification and promotion of strategic and non-strategic residential development sites.

The course provided me with an excellent foundation in understanding the world of town planning as well as an overview of associated disciplines, such as architecture, urban design, and economics. I loved my time in Sheffield and found the city incredibly welcoming and a great place to live and study - my tutors were excellent and enthusiastic!

My advice to anyone interested in pursing a career in planning would be to obtain some work experience with one or two employers prior to graduating - this can provide you with great experience of what 'real-world' planning is like and potentially give you a foot in the door with potential employers ahead of graduating.
