Iris is currently in the second year of Landscape Architecture MLA in the School of Architecture and Landscape. Iris chose Landscape Architecture because it combined many of their interests already in geography, art, ecology and design.

Why did you decide to study Landscape Architecture at Sheffield?

I chose Landscape Architecture because it combined many of my interests already in geography, art, ecology and design. I consider myself a people person and enjoy how social the course is between course mates, tutors and employers from guest lectures or exhibitions.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

The amount of opportunities for wider learning the course offers is incredible, this means there is always something interesting going on in the course such as site visits, trips to some really beautiful places, workshops, lunchtime seminars, exhibitions and Arts Tower society events.

Do you feel part of a wider community where you study?

I decided to join an Arts Tower society known as Landmark during my second year and this has allowed me to really become closer with not only my course mates working as a team but also get to know other year groups more and chat to them about the course and gain any help when needed. This has meant when I’m in studios or the computer rooms there’s always a friendly face to talk to!

What are you enjoying most about the ±¬ÁÏTV as a university/city?

Being close to so many green spaces has really made more of a positive impact than I realised, having the opportunity to go to the Peak District, Botanical gardens, Bolehills, Weston park, Crookes Valley park (and so many more!) has been very enjoyable. They provide a space to hang out with friends or a nice walk by yourself when University gets stressful.

What skills and knowledge have you developed during your course?

I have gained so many skills since studying here but I am most proud of the graphic skills and knowledge I have gained. From never using Adobe before to now feeling confident at creating visuals has been a really fun learning experience.

What are the facilities like in the School of Architecture and Landscape?

Having our own computer space for Landscape Architecture students in the Arts Tower has been incredibly helpful. It means you can always find a computer to work on, which is especially useful during exam seasons when all the other libraries are quite busy, the computer room also has other landscape students working there, which means you can always ask someone for help!

What advice would you give to a student thinking about studying your course at Sheffield?

To go for it! I came to this course knowing absolutely nothing about Landscape Architecture and was worried that I would fall behind. But the learning here that tutors offer is amazing, you can really utilise having that hands-on experience and are always encouraged to ask as many questions or for extra help when needed. The course offers so many transferable skills and you’ll find something that you’re truly passionate about.

How have you found the cost of living in Sheffield?

It is always a struggle at first to find the balance between costs when you first come to university, especially when it’s your first time living away from home. But I have found Sheffield to be a very student friendly city when it comes to the cost of living, especially for its nightlife, cafes, restaurants etc. It’s a learning process and the university also does offer student advice too at our student union such as tips to be more money savvy!

What are your future career aspirations, and how do you think this degree will help you achieve these?

I am hoping to build up a confident range of skills in ecology and design to go on to working for a Landscape Architecture firm. I am excited by the thought of working in a multidisciplinary company and gaining skills working with and across different teams perhaps even globally too. I believe studying Landscape Architecture at the ±¬ÁÏTV will help shape my skills and provide me with as many networking opportunities as possible.
