Dr Bethany Taylor is a Research Fellow at the School of Allied Health Professionals, Pharmacy, Nursing & Midwifery. Bethany has nine years’ experience in patient and carer experience research, has published over 45 articles in peer reviewed journals and is an emerging research leader in mesothelioma and patient experience research. 

She was awarded a PhD scholarship from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, ±¬ÁÏTV. She completed her PhD in 2018, under the supervision of Prof. Tony Ryan and Dr Jill Thompson.

In 2016, she started work as a Research Associate, contributing to a wide range of health services and patient experience research programmes, including work within the Royal College of Nursing strategic research alliance.

As Deputy Director of the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre at the ±¬ÁÏTV, Bethany supports the strategic development of research focused on improving outcomes and experiences for people affected by mesothelioma.

Her broader research portfolio spans public health, health inequalities, informal caregiving and palliative care. She has a particular interest in communication in healthcare settings and equitable access to services and treatments. Methodologically, her expertise lies in qualitative and mixed-methods research, including creative and participatory approaches that engage patients, carers and healthcare professionals. She has extensive experience working closely with health care professionals and community organisations. 

Research interests

Bethany’s research focuses on understanding the experiences of patients, informal carers and healthcare professionals in order to improve lived experience, service provision and care delivery. 

Key areas of interest include:

  • Patient and family/carer experiences of living with serious and life-limiting illness, particularly mesothelioma and other rare cancers 
  • Communication in healthcare settings
  • Health inequalities and equitable access to care and treatment
  • Nested qualitative sub-studies within clinical trials.

  • Caitlin Lusted: Experiences of scans and ‘scanxiety; amongst people with poor prognosis cancers.
